We're looking for images that capture the cut and thrust of sporting action, from the moment an athlete scores a goal or point to the split-second reaction that follows. Whether you're photographing professional competition, grassroots sport, individual athletes or unforgettable sporting moments, we want to see photographs that bring the excitement of sport to life.

Strong sports photography is often about anticipation and timing. Consider these approaches when capturing and selecting your images.
Capture the moment
Timing is everything. Look for moments of action, emotion, celebration or tension that tell a story.
Think beyond the action
The atmosphere, spectators, preparation, reaction and quieter moments surrounding a sporting event can make equally powerful photographs.
Consider your composition
Pay attention to backgrounds and distracting elements. Use your position, perspective and framing to make the main subject stand out.
Make your image stand out
Think carefully about your crop and processing. Exposure, colour, contrast and sharpness should work together to create a strong final photograph.

Competition Rules
- Enter as many images as you like.
- The work must be that of the entrant.
- No entry will be eligible that has been made under the supervision of an instructor or as a class assignment.
- Images submitted must be no larger than 2000 pixels wide.
- All entrants must be able to supply a high resolution image (300dpi).
- No distinguishing marks on the images.
- Copyright of the images remains with the photographer. The Societies recognises that the entrant, the author of the photograph, retains complete and full ownership of the copyright in each submission.
- Entries can be used for publicity purposes only by The Societies and may be included in our digital magazine Professional Imagemaker, as well as other promotional purposes.
- Competition closes 30 November 2026.
- The judge's decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

There is no limit on the number of images you can enter. Each image costs £1 to enter.
What type of sports photography can I enter?
We're looking for images that capture sporting action, emotion, atmosphere and memorable moments. Entries can feature professional competition, grassroots sport, individual athletes and the many moments that surround sporting events.
What size should my image be?
Submitted images must be no larger than 2000 pixels wide. Entrants must also be able to supply a high-resolution 300dpi version.
When does the competition close?
The Summer of Sports Photography Competition closes on 30 November 2026.
