Paul arrived at the shore, boarded one of the boats, with an experienced skipper and soon got into place among the spectacular waves with heart pumping. The skipper's job is to get the media guys in place close to the massive cliff-faced waves, while keeping them safe and out of the way of others.

The competitors too depend on experienced eagle-eyed rescuers, who zoom in on their ski-jets to pluck them to safety should they come unstuck - their lives are, literally, in their hands.
