Aperture
The reason that the pros pay for f2.8 telephotos is because that is the aperture they are forced into using the most frequently (actually it also helps autofocus). If you want to see the difference between a good sports shot and a poor one, look little further than your local free paper. The chances are that the shot of Longshot United (sponsored by DodgyMOTsRUs.com) is too short on focal length and probably an f5.6 zoom
Ian Cook - CameraSport
Enough theory for the moment! We now talk to Ian Cook who works right at the coal face and who talks here about shooting soccer for a living. Special thanks to Ian, Steve White (of CameraSport) and Premier League Dataco for permission to use the images in this feature.
Football and rugby are very similar to photograph. The pitches are almost the same size, apart from the length which is slightly greater in rugby. Rugby is a lot easier in terms of obtaining accreditation for professional photogrpahy, the Premiership, Championship, League 1 and League 2 all come under the tight control of the Premier League Dataco.
I work for a professional sports agency, Camerasport which is run by professional sports photographer, Steve White. Camerasport cover nearly every sport from football, rugby, cricket, tennis, snooker, athletics to darts. My Dataco licence is obtained through Camerasport. There are many rules that agencies and photographers need to be aware of in regard to how the images are displayed on websites, when and where the images are used.
My working week starts on Monday or Tuesday when I and Camerasport will look at the fixtures for the forthcoming weekend. I am the South Wales and West England area photographer for Camerasport, which means I cover the Swansea, Cardiff and Bristol areas in regards to football. So for example if Cardiff City are playing I will inform Elaine of Camerasport that I can cover that game and Elaine will then apply for accreditation via the club/Dataco online accreditation system. Once an email confirmation of the accreditation has been received by Camerasport, Elaine then emails me with the confirmation plus any details of what has been approved, for example if I have parking or not, use of club's wifi, etc. Parking is a big deal to us photographers due to the amount of kit we have to take to each game.
