A good warm hat and gloves are also a must.

Shooting the Game

During the game I will sit either to the side of the goal posts near the corner flag, or on the side of the pitch, in line with the six-yard box. Once in position I will focus on general action shots, tackles and shots at goal, etc. Once a major incident has taken place, a goal for example, I will quickly be uploading images to the laptop reporting who is in the picture, etc. This will then be sent, via ftp, straight to Camerasport's office in Leicester, from where the images are sent to tEvening games are slightly different for a lot of reasons.

For example the camera settings change, ie ISO will have to increase due to the lighting conditions along with shutter speeds - during a day-time game I'm trying to shoot between 1/1000 and 1/2500 of a second to freeze the action; at night time I'm having to compromise with shutter speeds of about 1/800, or 1/640 at a push. The other factor with evening games is the fact that the news desks close around 8.30pm, depending on what other games are on.

If Manchester United are also playing that night, then the news desk will remain open around 30 minutes after the end of the match, but usually we only have about 30 to 45 minutes to get images to the news desk. So, for example, if a goal happens in the first 10 minutes then it's a case of dropping everything to get those images uploaded, captioned and despatched. Once that's done it's a case of continuing with shooting the match. he various newspapers around the country.

When half time arrives I quickly pick up the laptop and start looking at the images, sorting the good from the bad and trying to get a good mix of shots out to the news desks. The second half is similar to the first,

I just continue to shoot the game and work on getting more images while the play is in the other half of the field.

Keeping a close eye on the game at all times, I always have one hand on my camera so that I can quickly start shooting should the action come back my way.
