"Ross asked if I'd like to be part of his team and I've been working happily with him for over a year now!"

Being part of a close-knit team of photographers who come together to work on big events has opened many doors for Ian. "Working for Dirty Green Trainers has given me a chance to spread my wings and get my work coming in." Previously Ian shot mostly football and rugby which are seasonal and with the Olympics only every four years it means that his summers could previously be a little empty. "Because triathlons usually run throughout the summer, starting in May and running through to October, that gives me something to keep me going during the summer months when I'm quiet with other sports."

The key to shooting a triathlon well is preparation before the event itself.

"When we get a new event we always scout it out first. We use the guides for the event as well as Google Maps so that we can get an idea of what it looks like." Timing is critical for a team of triathlon photographers. After the start of the swim has been captured, often one of the most desirable editorial shots, the photographers will break away and position themselves around the course to shoot the athletes on the bike. "Something that people don't" understand about triathlons is that because they have a one-mile swim they think it'll take them a long time. But the elite athletes are so fit and fast that before you know it they'll be out of the water and on the bikes. I found this out the hard way on my first triathlon, it was a big learning curve for me!"
