And of course you shouldn't discount the idea of the 'feel-good factor' that volunteering can bring. Many photographers want to use their skills in order to give something back or improve people's lives a little but struggle to find the right outlet. "Photographing local events well and publishing the photographs can really help to promote grass roots sports events." Simon is passionate about getting people into sports at any age or fitness level, which has also led to him sitting on the committee of the triathlon club and volunteering as a coach. "What a set of photographs of a grass-roots event does is show that everyone of all shapes and sizes can have a go. So through your photography you're encouraging people to be healthier by showing that all kinds of people can do these sports."

Of course triathlon isn't the only sport that can benefit from a volunteer photographer. "You can also give your time to organisations such as parkrun who organise local five kilometre runs that are open to all on a weekly basis." Some of these runs can attract over 500 participants and therefore can be a good place to begin getting your business name out there. "'Photographer' is actually an official volunteer role for parkrun and the events will usually be happy to post your images on their social media pages and link to your website. Activities like that can't do any harm in raising awareness for your business." But how can that turn into sales leads for a photographer? "It's worth remembering that sports such as triathlon tend to attract quite wealthy people, the gear can be very, very expensive.
