On the other hand you can afford to be more selective when photographing both the cycling and running sections of the triathlon. "With cycling I like to add in more creative techniques such as panning. By using a flashgun with hypersync you can drop the ambient light of the sky while still maintaining a shallow depth of field." Carrying multiple cameras can provide you with different options for settings and therefore provide both participants and organisers with a wider variety of images.
"I find the running aspect of the triathlon the hardest" says Ian. "With the bikes there's a speed element, or a raw and gritty feeling if they're coming up the hill. I try to use the landscape and go more picturesque with my images of the run." A good background can be crucial for shooting a great image of a sport such as triathlon. "The number one rule is to make sure that there is nothing imposing on the image. You can get some lovely shots in country lanes for example if the weather is atmospheric too. I have a favourite image from the Gower Triathlon where the lead rider was coming out of the fog with his head down. It really captured the loneliness of an endurance athlete."
Ian is speaking at the Societies' Convention in 2015 about the business of being a sports photographer. "I'm going to talk about how people can get into the business, the pitfalls they should avoid and essentials such as liability insurance. We'll also spend some time going through basic kit that every sports photographer should own." But what does Ian hope participants will do with the knowledge from his Masterclass? "I hope that people will take my advice, put it to good use and achieve the things that they want to achieve. It's always fantastic to hear about success stories."
